Breakaway

by Arcadia

In response to the Red Kryptonite Challenge.

*****

Getting rewards weren’t uncommon Superman thought as he, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern stood in attendance before the King and Queen of Arusia. But they certainly were embarrassing for this superhero raised on a farm. Hours ago, Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern fought the Darconian invaders off the peaceful planet of Arusia.
It wasn’t even Superman’s night for Justice League duty. It was Batman’s but he was busy with a crime wave in Gotham. There was a massive breakout out from Arkham Asylum with Joker, Harley, Penguin, Two-Face and Poison Ivy escaping. Batman’s policy always has been and always will be: Gotham first, the world second. As soon as Superman arrived for Batman’s shift, J’onn ordered him to join Green Lantern and Wonder Woman in the Javelin. Wonder Woman explained the situation as Green Lantern flew them to Arusia.
Green Lantern looked natural as he stood before the King. Green Lantern was in the military and metals were often received for service and promotion in rank. This particular award, the same as Superman‘s was an insignia of the Royal House, which meant, they will always be welcome to the planet of Arusia.
The Queen of Arusia stepped before Wonder Woman. “And for personally saving my life, I bestow on you, Wonder Woman, this necklace from my personal collection.”
Wonder Woman lowered her head as the Queen of Arusia placed the necklace on her. The gold chain was embedded with a red stone.
The red jewel on Wonder Woman’s necklace caught Superman’s eye. He felt a shiver run through his body. There was something about the stone on Wonder Woman’s necklace he found mesmerizing. Superman shook his head to clear his mind. He was mesmerized by a stone? Perhaps he got hit in the head harder than he thought when a Darconian ship pushed him into a mountain or maybe he was just exhausted. This past week alone, Superman dealt with Metallo, Livewire, Volcana, Solomon Grundy and Bizarro who was trying to kidnap Lois again, not to mention Justice League business where they faced Vandal Savage with another apocalyptic device, Groud and Brainiac. That night, he was supposed to have dinner with Lois to unwind but once again, Justice League business took over his date with Lois. He rearranged it for the next night but Lois wasn’t happy about it.
That night wasn’t a total loss. He did end up having dinner with a pretty woman that evening: Wonder Woman. After dealing with Groud, Wonder Woman confessed she was hungry and wasn’t up to eating in the Watchtower. Superman decided to call in a favor. They flew to China where Superman saved a man and his restaurant from total destruction by Brainiac. The man promised Superman a free meal whenever he wanted. It was a year ago but Superman decided to cash in. The owner remembered him and cooked Superman and Wonder Woman a terrific. They were allowed to eat in a private room where they wouldn’t be disturbed. With the dinner and Wonder Woman’s company he forgot about his failed date with Lois.
Superman noticed Wonder Woman sharing a brief comment with the queen and he couldn’t help but wonder if Wonder Woman thought of her own mother. She was banished and recently reinstated back to Themyscira. Superman was happy for her but Superman always felt partially blamed for Wonder Woman’s banishment since he told her to go home. Wonder Woman told him it wasn’t his fault but that didn’t stop Superman from feeling guilty.
“Thank you, once more, Justice League for coming to our aid,” the King of Arusia said.
The three members of the Justice League bowed and departed for the Javelin. Green Lantern flew back while Wonder Woman sat in the copilot seat. Superman felt that weird feeling again as he sat behind Wonder Woman. Perhaps he was exhausted and his body was telling him to rest.
Once the Javelin was safely in space, Superman stood suddenly. “I’m gonna catch a nap before we get home.” And without another word, Superman head towards the back in the only sleep quarters of the ship.
****
“Another day, another reward,” Green Lantern quipped as he maneuvered the Javelin back to Earth.
“There’s nothing wrong being rewarded for a job well done,” Wonder Woman said. Wonder Woman looked in the direction of the room Superman was resting in. “Superman didn‘t sound like himself earlier.”
“He’s probably tired,” Green Lantern said. “Superman’s been working several shifts for the League not to mention his own life in Metropolis.”
“Double identities,” Wonder Woman mused. “That’s not for me.”
Superman was refreshed when he awakened three hours later. That nap really restored his energy and cleared him of that strange feeling. He left the room and arrived in the cockpit just as Green Lantern flew in the Watchtower. He thought the nap refreshed him but that strange feeling returned the moment he entered the cockpit.
“Did you have a good nap?” Wonder Woman asked him, her eyes straight ahead.
That strange feeling zipped through him again, stronger this time. Maybe he hadn’t gotten enough rest. Superman looked down at Wonder Woman, getting a nice view of her cleavage through her uniform. “Yes, I did.”
Superman worked with this beautiful woman everyday and he never used his powers to get a look at her au natural. He realized he wasn’t using his powers to the best of his ability. It was time to fix that. Once the Javelin came to a smooth landing, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman unfasten their belts. Superman stepped out of the way letting Green Lantern walked off first and leaving Superman with a wonderful view of Wonder Woman walking off. He used his x ray vision to look through her clothes.
“Nice and firm.”
Wonder Woman turned her head. “Did you say something, Superman?”
Superman smiled as innocent as a farm boy. “No, just thinking aloud.”
Wonder Woman stare at him for a moment, then shrugged and walked out of the ship. Flash greeted them since he was the only one on duty. While Green Lantern and Wonder Woman recant to Flash of their mission, Superman seemed disinterested with the discussion.
“I think I’m going to pack it in for the night. I’ll see you tomorrow,” Superman left them and head for the teleporter.
All three adults looked in Superman’s direction. “You’re leaving?” Flash said. He raced in front of him. “But your shift started.”
“And I’m ending it,” Superman stared at Flash with a gaze that made Flash take a step back. “Unless you want to stop me.”
Flash put his hands up as he took another step back, “No. It’s cool. We’ve got this.”
The others watch Superman use the teleported to return to Earth. “What was that about?” Green Lantern asked.
“You think Bats attitude is rubbing off on Supes?” Flash questioned. He shuddered. “I think I’m gonna have nightmares.”
“He’s been working a lot lately,” Wonder Woman said sympathetic to Superman. “Perhaps he needs a break.”
Flash scoffed. “All a guy’s gotta do is ask for a break instead of threatening to kill someone.”
****
Once in Metropolis, Superman swoops down to Lois’ balcony. It was late and her lights were out. Superman casually walked in as if it was his right. It should be. Lois was his girlfriend. She should be happy that he blew off his shift with the Justice League to be with her. In fact, she should always be happy when he spends time with her instead of being angry their dinner was postponed.
Superman entered Lois’ bedroom and shook her gently. “Lois. Lois.”
Lois opened her eyes. She saw a male figure in the shadows and quickly flipped on the lights. She relaxed when she saw it was Superman. “Superman?” she said groggily and looked at her clock. “What are you doing here?”
“I came for dinner.”
“It’s almost midnight,” Lois complained. “Don’t they have food at the Watchtower?”
“I left the league because I thought having dinner with you was important,” he said aggressively. “Don’t you think I deserve it?”
Lois looked at him oddly. “Are you all right?”
“I’m fine,” he said tightly. “I’m annoyed my girlfriend is angry with me for canceling our dinner date, then I go out my way to surprise her and she gets an attitude.”
“All right, all right,” Lois groused getting out of bed. She grabbed her nightly wrap. “I’ll heat you something up.”
Superman finally took noticed of Lois wearing a short, black gown that revealed her long legs and a nice view of her breasts. He grabbed her arm and looked her over appreciatively. “Leave the wrap off.”
Lois eyed him. She knew what he was thinking. “Yeah, right,” she said and put her wrap on.
Superman sat patiently at Lois’ kitchen table as Lois warmed up dinner. He was using his x ray vision to look at her naked body. Nice though there’s a sag here and there and she’s not as sexy as Diana but she’ll do.
As Lois warmed up dinner, Lois wondered what was with Superman’s attitude. Perhaps he wanted a break from being Superman and spend time with her. Far be it for her to keep him from relaxing. He of all people deserved it. Lois fixed him a plate of her leftover pork chops, mashed potatoes and vegetables.
Superman ate his dinner while Lois sat across from him drinking a glass of water. “Pork chops are dry but still decent,” Superman said between bites.
Lois gripped her glass. “Really?” Superman wakes her up in the middle of night, have her warm up dinner and he insults it? Lois rose from her seat and pulled out her tape recorder from her kitchen drawer. Normally, Lois wouldn’t record conversations with Superman while on a date but for this, she’ll make an exception.
“Superman, we haven’t talked much about the Justice League personally. How about an exclusive?”
“What does your nosy, danger prone butt want to know now?” Superman asked.
Lois narrowed her eyes at him. “Are you stress out and taking your frustrations out on me?”
Superman eyed Lois, curious. “No. I’ve never felt better really. Why?”
“You come into my apartment in the middle of the night, wake me up, order dinner from me, insult my cooking and then call me names and you don’t see a problem with that?” Lois snapped.
“I only told the truth and did what was right.”
If she had the strength, she would smack him till it hurts but she didn’t and the last thing she wanted was a shouting match with the Man of Steel. “You know what? It’s too late to get into this now. Let’s just go with the questions. How is it working with the rest of the league?”
“Fine. As long as they don’t get in my way or I have to save them. Flash is the worse. He’s always goofing off and I have to save his loudmouth almost every time. He’s a worthless superhero. Green Lantern always has a military attitude, which is fine. It works and then sometimes doesn’t. I don’t know who’s worse--him or Batman, Mr. I-Have-A-Plan-For-Everything. The guy trusts no one. He’s so paranoid it’s pathetic. If no one is doing the plan his way, he gets upset because he thinks we’re wrong and he’s right always. Martian Manhunter is cool. I have no problems with him, as long as he doesn‘t read my mind. The other members besides the founding ones are second and third rate heroes.”
“But they come through when needed right?”
“Yeah, but where were they when the founding members were captured and the Thanagars invaded Earth? We really could’ve kicked some Thanagarian tail if they come out of hiding.”
“I noticed you haven’t commented on the female members of the team--Hawkgirl and Wonder Woman.”
“What’s to say? Shayera is a bit of butch if you know what I mean. She‘s too aggressive. But being from Thanagar, it’s no wonder she’s so screwed up. Her relationship to Hro was arranged and I can see that with her attitude. No surprise. Wonder Woman, I have no problem with. She‘s perfect.”
“Perfect?” Lois scoffed. “No one’s perfect.”
“Wonder Woman is,” Superman said confidently and Lois could feel the jealously rising in her.
Lois was always jealous of Wonder Woman when she came onto the scene and worked with the League, particularly Superman. Many people have commented what a great pair they‘d be and that annoyed Lois to no end. “Really? What’s so perfect about her?”
“She’s intelligent, strong, a great fighter and drop dead gorgeous. The best thing about her is she doesn’t brag about her beauty or intelligence which makes her even more sexy.”
Lois paste a smile on her face while digging her fingers in her palm. “That’s interesting.”
“She’s also a fast learner.”
“What do you mean about that?” Lois asked her mind thinking something else.
“It didn’t take her long to fly the Javelin or drive a car. You’d think someone who hasn’t been expose to technology would be slow to catch on but she took to it like a fish to water.” Superman smiled proudly. “It’s very impressive.”
“I guess that’s why she’s Wonder Woman.” Lois said. She was pissed, absolutely pissed Superman, her boyfriend would talk about Wonder Woman like a love sick puppy and right in front of her.
“Her rack is definitely a wonder,” Superman added with a wicked grin.
Lois slammed her fist on the table. “That does it! What the hell’s the matter with you?” Lois snapped. “How can you talk about Wonder Woman like that in front of me, your girlfriend?”
Superman shrugged his shoulders not bothered with Lois‘ outburst. “I’m telling the truth.”
“Keep that to yourself! I don’t want to hear how great Wonder Woman is!” Lois yelled.
“You ask.”
“I was asking in a professional manner not personally. It’s not like you can have her anyway,” Lois grinned with a knowing smirk. “She comes from an island of no men.”
Superman shot back Lois’ smirk with one of his own. “That doesn’t mean a thing. Wonder Woman is naïve in certain areas and she closest to me than any of the other members of the League.” He laughed seeing the reaction on Lois’ face. “Jealously doesn’t become you, Lois.”
Lois laughed heartily. “Jealous? Me? Hardly.”
“Of course you are and you should be. Wonder Woman is taller, smarter and much more beautiful than you. I don’t have to come to her rescue. She doesn’t get herself in situation where she can’t get out of without needing my help. Her breasts are bigger and perkier and she can handle me in bed. I wouldn’t have to hold my strength back on her as I would with you.”
By now, tears stung Lois’ eyes. “Get the hell out! I don’t want to see you!”
Superman rose. “Fine. I don’t want to be with you anymore either.” He flew out the window feeling deliciously wicked. It felt good to tell Lois off like that. Now that they broken up, he could set his sights on the one he really wanted.
****
Superman woke up in his room in the Watchtower. After leaving Lois, he returned to his apartment in Metropolis to find his phone ringing. He saw Lois’ name on the Caller ID. He didn’t want to hear her whine so he flew out of his apartment and headed for the Watchtower. It annoyed him Lois never figured out Clark and Superman were the same. He didn’t have to worry about that anymore. He and Lois were broken up for good.
Superman felt odd as if he was coming off a hangover. Superman stepped out of his room, expecting fresh air to clear his mind. He suddenly thought of Lois and the argument they had. Did I really say all that? He had to see Lois now. He had to apologize for his behavior. He was going to leave using his super speed when he saw Diana enter the hallway.
“Good morning, Superman. I didn’t know you were here.”
Superman noticed sweat on Diana’s forehead. Superman knew the only time Diana sweat would be in the training room where she always pushed and test her skills. “In the training room again?”
Diana smiled. “An Amazon always train even in times of peace. I’m glad I ran into you. I like to have a word.”
“I would like to, Diana, but I’m in a hurry.”
“Don’t worry. It won’t take more than a minute or two. We’ll talk in my room.”
Seeing no sense to argue, Superman agreed. It wouldn‘t take long to talk to Diana and he can always speed out of the Watchtower when he‘s through. Once inside Diana‘s room, Superman was overcome with a strange feeling again. He looked to Diana’s desk and saw the necklace given to her by the Queen of Arusia. Mesmerized, he picked up the necklace. Touching the red stone created an odd sensation to overpower him. He placed a hand to his head and closed his eyes briefly.
Diana noticed this and went to his side. “Superman, are you all right?”
Superman recovered and smiled flirtatiously at Diana. “Never better. You wanna go one-on-one in the training room?”
Diana looked at him suspicious. If she didn’t know any better, Superman just flirted with her. “Excuse me?”
“You exercise in that training room against machines. Fight with me and I’ll give you a real workout. What’d you say?”
Superman winked at her and Diana was even more baffled by his behavior. “That’s what I wanted to talk to you about, Superman. You seem different. I know you have been busy with your life in Metropolis and the Justice League. I wonder if you need a break from both.”
“I’ll take a break if you come with me.”
Diana for once was speechless. Men made passes to her all the time and she knew how to handle them, but never did it come from Superman. It totally caught her off guard.
Superman was grinning. He never thought the Amazon Princess would be speechless from comments coming from him. Superman placed the red necklace in Diana’s hands. “This necklace looks very pretty on you. You should keep it on.”
“It’s not like you to give compliments, Superman,” Diana commented.
“I think it’s time I do, especially to the most deserving.”
Superman winked at her and Diana smiled, nervous. She pulled her hands from his. “I…. I have to go. I have to clean up and I have to relieve J‘onn.”
Superman took it as his cue to leave but not before pulling Diana in his arms. She didn’t struggle, only stared at him with wide curious eyes. Superman lowered his head, moving his lips to hers and just before he kissed her lips, he kissed Diana’s cheek instead. He looked into her eyes mischievously. “I’ll see you later.”
She’s still a woman. Superman thought confidently as he left Diana’s room.

****
Superman flew in Metropolis for a few hours. He made a quick call to Perry White to let him know he wasn’t coming in. Superman decided to treat himself to some fun. Superman flew to over the world at super speed, creating sonic booms. He created hurricanes in the middle of the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean using his super speed. He straightened the leaning Tower of Pisa. He flew to Easter Island and bench press several of the stone statues before placing them upside down as well as changing weather patterns across the globe. Every place he stopped off at, he took pictures with locals, particularly the pretty women and showing off his powers for them.
When he was through having fun, Superman flew to the Watchtower for the weekly meeting.
“Hey, Supes, got that much needed rest?” Flash asked holding a bag of burgers and fries. He grinned at him. “I saw you on the news. Everyone’s talking about you being so friendly with the locals.” He added with a wink. “Next time, tell me so I can come.”
“You’ll ruin my style,” Superman said and walked off.
Flash followed him, eating and talking at the same time. “Come on! We’ll get plenty of babes together! I know some women who can touch their heads with their toes. Talk about flexible!”
Superman stopped at the doors leading to the boardroom. “If I ever need you in getting women, Flash, I’ll stab myself with kryptonite.”
Superman turned and entered the room. All the other league members were sitting as they waited for them. Flash was late a few times but never was Superman. He was always punctual. Flash took the empty seat besides Wonder Woman. One glare from Superman told Flash to get up and take the empty seat next to Batman.
Wonder Woman was nervous having Superman sit next to her given what happened between them this morning but she didn’t show it.
“What’s the weekly meeting about now?” Superman asked.
J’onn was the first to speak. He drone on about Justice League duties. Vandal Savage escaped again. Some politicians and army officials post distrust in the League. Superman drowned J’onn out and focused on the beautiful woman beside him.
Wonder Woman was listening to J’onn with her hands in her lap. Wonder Woman felt Superman placed his hands on hers. Wonder Woman maintained her cool but she was simmering with anger. She knew if she was any other place and this wasn’t Superman doing this, she would’ve slapped his hand off and beat him into submission. Wonder Woman pulled her hand away but Superman locked a firmer grip on it. Wonder Woman knew how to get by that. She relaxed her hands, letting Superman think she’d given up. When Superman’s hand relaxed, she dug her nails into his and freed herself from his hold.
Wonder Woman smiled inwardly, thinking Superman wouldn’t do that again. She was fooled when Superman played footsie with her.
“Diana?”
Wonder Woman looked up at J’onn who was addressing her. “Yes?”
“Do you have anything to add before I address the final matter of the day?”
Wonder Woman shook her head though she could feel Superman rubbed her left leg against his. “No.” She struggled the words out as tried to fight off Superman’s playful leg.
“With nothing else, I like to discuss Superman’s behavior today reported on the news.”
As soon as the words were out of J’onn’s mouth, Superman and Wonder Woman looked at the Martian at full attention.
“What about my behavior?” Superman asked rudely.
“You’ve been rather busy,” J’onn said. “There are reports of you making hurricanes forming in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.”
“I did that,” Superman admitted without shame. “I was testing my powers and it’s in the middle of the oceans, far from any boats and land. It was perfectly safe.”
“What about the sonic booms reported across, America, Europe and Asia?” Green Lantern asked. “Military officials confirm it wasn’t them. You gave the people below quite a fright.”
“Over a sonic boom?” Superman scoffed. “I was testing my speed. I have to keep in shape.”
“How about the Leaning Tower of Pisa?” J’onn asked.
“It was leaning and I straightened it. If it had fallen with all those people in it, hundreds of people would be hurt. I should be congratulated,” Superman argued.
“What about the changes to the weather?” Flash asked. “Making rain in the South? Snow in the Middle East? You said we can’t play with out powers like that.”
Superman scoffed. “Do you hear the people in the South complaining? They’ve been in a drought for weeks. I doubt if anyone in the Middle East is complaining about snow after the triple digit heat. Besides, I’m Superman. I can do what I want.”
“What about the pictures of you and all those women?” Shayera asked. “There’s also footage of you showing off your powers. Are you trying to prove yourself a Superman with them? You were worse than Flash when he shows off.”
“Hey!” Flash said offended.
“Jealous?” Superman asked smirking at Shayera.
Flash snickered and Green Lantern smacked him on the back of his head.
“Ow!” Flash complained rubbing the back of his head. “I’m not the one who said that!”
“You have to admit your behavior lately seem uncharacteristic for you,” Batman said.
Superman glared at Batman. “Why? Because I’m actually having fun for once? I’m not the overgrown Boy Scout you all think I am? I don’t hide my feelings or have so much trouble dealing with personal loss it affects my adult life to a psychotic level like you, Batman.” He smiled wickedly. “Don’t worry. Your loss is my gain.”
“Superman, you’re obviously not yourself. I suggest--”
Superman whirled around to face J’onn. “What are you going to suggest, Martian freak? I bet you’re trying to read my mind now. What am I thinking now?”
J’onn frowned. “That wasn’t called for.”
“I don’t need to read your mind to let you know something’s wrong with you, Superman,” Green Lantern spoke.
Superman glared at Green Lantern as if he‘s one to talk. “If anyone has something wrong with them, it’s you, GL. Sleeping with Shayera while you’re still seeing Vixen. That’s pretty low. With Vixen, you know what the game is. But how can you be so certain about Shayera? She may sell us out to the Thanagarians again and make you into an even bigger fool than you are now.” Superman looked from Shayera to Green Lantern. “Is she always on top or do you ever try to be the dominant one?”
Green Lantern jumped from the table and launched himself at Superman. Superman punched Green Lantern with no restraint, sending Green Lantern flying across the room to the wall, causing a tiny shake in the room. Green Lantern slumped to the ground unconscious. Shayera jumped from her seat to check on Green Lantern.
Superman shook his head at the display and walked out of the room. Everyone else went to check on Green Lantern too. Green Lantern’s left eye was weld shut and a bruise was forming on his left cheek.
“That was stupid,” Flash told Green Lantern. “Challenging Superman? How dumb are you?” He looked to Shayera as it dawn on him what Superman said. “You two are really seeing each other again?”
Wonder Woman looked off in the direction Superman left. “I’m going after Superman and I’m gonna talk to him.”
Flash watched her leave. “Well, at least she can hold her own, GL, I gotta admit that was really stupid.” He look to Shayera. “So when you guys do it, does the wings get in the way?”
Shayera punched Flash, knocking him out. She glared at the other men. “Anyone else got something to say?”
J’onn stepped back and Batman remained silent as always.

****

Wonder Woman found Superman in the Control Room. He was setting up the teleporter for transport back to Earth.
“Superman!”
Superman turned and smiled as Wonder Woman approached him. “I was hoping you would follow me. Come on. Let’s get out of here.”
Wonder Woman stepped closer to Superman. She noticed other members walking around and she didn’t want them to know what transpired in the meeting. “Superman, why did you respond like that in the meeting?”
“I was telling it like it is. You can’t tell me you haven’t had those thoughts about the others.”
“You don’t say everything that cross your mind,” Wonder Woman informed him.
“I felt like. Everyday, I’ve had to hold back because I’m dubbed the oldest Boy Scout. You think I gave myself that name?” Superman rolled his eyes at the disgust of the name. “I’m labeled as Mr. Good Guy. People fear Batman more than me and I can break someone in twenty different places without breaking a sweat.”
“You’re stressed,” Wonder Woman assume. “You’ve been working a lot lately and not getting enough rest. It’s best you take a few days off.”
“Sure, if you join me.” Before Wonder Woman could respond, Superman grabbed her hand and pulled her with him on the teleporter. He kept a light hold around her so she wouldn’t bolt. In seconds, they vanished from the Watchtower and arrived in Metropolis.
Once in Metropolis, Wonder Woman pulled herself out of Superman‘s arms but she hadn‘t let go of his hand. “Superman, this isn’t like you.” Wonder Woman stared at him concern. “Kal, I’m worried about you. Whatever it is, you can tell me.”
Superman smiled. Wonder Woman was the only one to call him by that name and he always loved how melodious it sounded coming from her voice.
Superman touched the red stone around Diana’s neck. “I see you’re wearing the necklace.”
“Kal, talk to me.”
Superman gripped Wonder Woman‘s hands gently. “Just fly with me, Diana. Then we’ll talk.”
His cerulean eyes were intense with subtle softness to it. Wonder Woman pushed aside her immediate thoughts of Superman’s gaze and agreed with his request seeing that would lead to him sharing his problem with her.
Aware she hadn’t let go of his hand, Wonder Woman flew with Superman across the Metropolis. They continued to fly over the country, then across the Pacific Ocean before heading north.
“I’ve always wanted to fly with you,” Superman told Wonder Woman. There was a sparkle in his eyes when he said so. “There’re a lot of things I’ve wanted to do with you.” He pulled Wonder Woman into his arms and wrapped his cape around her as they entered the Artic.
“You know the cold doesn’t bother me,” Wonder Woman informed Superman though she inwardly shivered being so close to him.
“Old habits die hard,” he quipped.
Wonder Woman wasn’t sure what to make of Superman’s behavior. He was never this forward with her. Superman was always confident and honest with her whenever they talked about Justice League business. When it came to their personal lives, Superman treated her as a friend, never showing any romantic interest in her. There also was a touch of shyness she noticed about him. It was out of character of the strong man he was but it was also intriguing. What did Superman have to be shy about?
When Wonder Woman locked her eyes on Superman, she realized the look he was giving her. His eyes were filled with longing, unrequited feelings and Wonder Woman found herself blushing. Wonder Woman always considered herself a strong, confident woman, but now being in Superman’s arms Wonder Woman was feeling nervous, irresolute and excited at the same time. The only other man who made her feel this way was Steve Trevor when he put the moves on her while she was in World War II. She never felt this way towards Batman. With Batman, she was strong, confident and flirty even though nothing became of the two. Batman had told her more than once it wouldn’t work and eventually, Wonder Woman herself saw it wouldn’t either. There were too many differences and even now Wonder Woman wondered what she ever saw in Batman romantically.
Superman and Wonder Woman arrived in the Fortress of Solitude. Once firmly on her feet, Wonder Woman pulled away from him. “We can’t do this.”
“Why not?” Superman asked. He took a step towards her and Wonder Woman floated from him. He floated to her, shortening the distance between them.
That was foolish, Diana told herself. “I’m still understanding Man’s World,” she blurted. “These feelings around men… I haven’t been able to decipher yet.”
“You’ve been hear long enough to know what men and women want,” he said matter factly.
Superman flew closer to her but Wonder Woman floated back, distancing herself again. “It’s rumored you’re involved with Lois Lane, a reporter.”
Superman smirked. “Lois and I aren’t together anymore.”
Wonder Woman was taken back. “You’re not?” She wasn’t going to admit it out loud but part of her was relieved.
“Yeah,” Superman admitted, feigning his hurt. “It was never going to work out with us. I was always worried her involvement with me and if it will cause her harm or even her death one day. She didn’t even know my alter ego. Lois’ also human. She can’t defend herself like you and she dislike how my time with Justice League business interfered with our time together.”
“That sounds selfish,” Wonder Woman said, sympathetic to Superman. “You’re responsible for something that protects everyone in the world.”
Superman sighed, showing genuine frustration. “I know. She didn’t understand and I had enough of it. We amicably decided it was time to end our relationship.”
“I’m sorry,” Wonder Woman said, considerate. “I’m sure you cared a great deal about her.”
Superman smiled, knowing he was scoring points with Wonder Woman. “Thank you. It’s for the best and I must admit I was distracted.” This time he was staring into Wonder Woman’s eyes, slowly closing the distance between them. “You never knew how I felt about you, Diana. I’ve always been attracted to you. You’re so beautiful and yet you’re so humble about it. You’re smart, strong,” he laughs. “You’re so many things. It even intimidates me.”
“What do you mean?” Wonder Woman asked lost in his gaze.
“You’re a princess and I’m a farm boy, living in the big city, known by many as Superman, the world’s greatest hero. Everyone sees me as Superman but I see myself as that quiet farm boy working in a big city, and being with you makes me feel like the shy, awkward boy calling the Prom Queen for a date. I didn’t think I had a chance with you so I sought out to be your friend but now I have this newfound confidence in me that says I can be with you.”
“You shouldn’t feel intimidated because I’m a princess, Kal. I’m Princess Diana on Themyscira, Wonder Woman to the rest of the world but I’m just a woman,” she reach forward to cradle his cheek in her palm,” her eyes locked with his, “just as you are a man.”
Superman kissed her palm then her fingers, a smile tugging his lips. He could see in her eyes, the dormant feelings she had for him surfacing. “Your heart‘s racing.”
“Isn‘t yours?” she asked breathless.
“Most definitely,” Superman said pulling Wonder Woman closer to capture her lips with his. It took a moment but Wonder Woman kissed back as ribbons of tenderness and rising passion flowed through their bodies. Her hands slid in Superman’s hair, holding him captive, preventing his escape if he tried. Her ragged breath fanned his nose and cheek as they deepened the kiss. She held back a surprise at herself for she never went this far with Steve Trevor or Batman.
The kiss ended far too soon when Superman pulled back. He was a little out of breath himself and Wonder Woman couldn’t help but smirk. It was very rare for Superman to be out of breath. For her to do what so little accomplished, made her feel proud to have that kind of power over Superman.
Superman caught her smirk and laughed it off as he pulled into his arms.
“That was nice,” Wonder Woman said.
“Nice?” Superman mocked the word and Wonder Woman laughed. “If you call that nice, what do you call fantastic?”
“I don’t know,” Wonder Woman looked in his eyes playfully. “That’s something you’ll have to show me.” Superman moved to kiss her again but Wonder Woman stopped him. “Wait. I think we should keep this between us and take it slow. I don’t want others gossiping about us.”
“Like you and Bruce?” Superman guessed.
Woman Wonder was stunned. “You knew?”
“Ears like these don’t miss much,” Superman said. He saw a heat creep on her face. “I do know whatever you were trying to do, didn’t work and it wouldn’t have worked with you two.” Wonder Woman nodding agreeing. “Hey,” Superman said touching her chin and forcing her to look at him. “But that doesn’t mean we can’t.” He closed the gap between them and kissed her again.

Green Lantern sat at the kitchen table with an ice pack over his eye and attempting to eat a bowl of ice cream when Batman entered. Even though Batman‘s face was hidden behind his mask, Green Lantern guessed his mind was on the meeting earlier.
Batman sat across from Green Lantern, “What has Superman been doing since I last saw him a week ago?”
Green Lantern put a spoonful of ice cream in his mouth. “Trying to figure out his behavior from this meeting, too? There was nothing out of the ordinary, except he was doing a lot of shifts here. I know he took over your shifts while you stayed in Gotham and he had a lot of crimes hitting Metropolis this week. I assume he was overworked but he seemed fine.” He resumed eating his ice cream and then, “Before today, the only time Superman acted different happened when we returned from Arusia. He took a nap in the Javelin, which is odd. Superman suddenly left the Watchtower saying he was finished with his shift and almost challenged Flash to a fight. He came back a few hours later and didn’t say a word.”
Batman stood and head for the door. “Where are you going?” Green Lantern asked.
“Talk to another source,” Batman said and left.
Batman spotted Lois Lane sitting on the sofa eating ice cream from the box and a package of cookies. Boxes of tissue laid all over the sofa. Judging by the puffiness on her eyes, Batman could tell Lois had been crying. He didn’t want to startled her so he tapped her window. Lois turned around expecting Superman but frowned seeing Batman coming through her window.
“What are you doing here?” Lois asked angrily.
“I’ve come to talk about Superman.”
“I don’t want to talk about him.”
“What happened?” Batman asked.
“We broke up!” Lois yelled. “Isn’t that obvious? I thought you would be able to figure that out. You’re the detective, right?”
Batman ignored Lois lash out at him as he sought to find answers. “Why did you breakup?”
“Superman didn’t want me. Apparently, I was his until something better came along.”
“Who?” Batman asked though he had an idea of who this woman was.
“Who do you think?” Lois snapped. “Miss save-the-day-in-a-swimsuit! Miss Perfect! That damn Island Girl!”
“Wonder Woman,” Batman said. He thought about Wonder Woman in the meeting. She was just as surprised as everyone else by Superman’s outburst. Wonder Woman left to talk to him and he wasn’t waiting until she came back. He wanted answers now. Green Lantern assumed Superman’s irritability from lack of rest but Batman knew there was more to it than that.
****
The following day, Batman found Wonder Woman and asked her about finding Superman after the meeting. Wonder Woman said Superman was dealing with personal issues and needed some time away. Wonder Woman didn’t go into anymore details than that which made Batman even more suspicious. Superman did take a break from the League for a day. Batman also noticed Wonder Woman was missing as well. They’ve both been back for a week now and Batman noticed the two were taking more missions together just like he and Wonder Woman where when she wanted to pursue a relationship with him.
Batman also noticed Wonder Woman wearing a red stone necklace. J’onn informed him Wonder Woman received the necklace from the Queen of Arusia. It was also around that time Superman started to behave oddly.
Another day passed as Batman arrived at the Watchtower for his shift. His main focus was talking to Wonder Woman. He was going to find out how close she and Superman were and if she was the key to Superman‘s strange behavior.
“Where are Superman and Wonder Woman?” Batman asked J’onn who was on duty.
“They’re in Prague. Solomon Grundy and Giganta are trying to steal a Golem.” J’onn pulled up the screen from the satellite. Batman observe the fight between Superman and Solomon Grundy.
Grundy was getting a serious beat down by Superman. Batman noticed Superman was putting a lot more strength in his punches and Grundy didn’t stand a chance. Finally, Grundy passed out from a serious beaten.
“A little rough don’t you think?” Batman said.
“Superman is showing more fight in battles but he never goes too far,” J’onn explained.
“Have you tried reading his mind?” Batman asked.

“Batman, you know I don’t pry in the minds of our friends. I respect their privacy.”
“Have you?” Batman pressed.
“Superman is more relaxed. He doesn’t have any inhibitions. My guess is he’s under some kind of influence but seeing how indestructible he is, that’s hard to believe. Other than that outburst at the meeting, Superman has been more like himself.”
Batman agreed with J’onn on that. Superman didn’t have another outburst but that didn’t mean he was back to himself. He was also spending more time with Wonder Woman. J’onn was right. Superman was under a strange influence and Batman’s gut told him he wasn’t free from it yet.
An hour later, Superman and Wonder Woman returned to the Watchtower. “Welcome back,” J’onn greeted them.
“Thanks, J’onn. Giganta and Solomon Grundy are locked up. I don’t think we’ll be seeing them anytime soon,” Wonder Woman said confidently.
“I could go for a root beer soda,” Superman said and looked at Wonder Woman. “Care to join me?”
“She can, but I’d like to have a word with Wonder Woman first,” Batman interrupted.
Wonder Woman look at Superman. “I’ll join you after I talk with Batman.”
Superman said nothing as he continued to the kitchen. Batman and Wonder Woman stepped into the observatory where they would have some privacy. “I watched Superman battling Grundy. Superman was more aggressive than usual.”
“There’s nothing wrong with that. Some criminals won’t understand unless you use force. I’m sure Solomon Grundy will think twice before committing a crime again.”
“Superman should be careful of how far he goes.”
Wonder Woman frowned at Batman‘s insinuations. “Superman knows his strength. He knows when to pull back.”
“Taking his side?”
“Why not? He’s my friend.”
“You’re still wearing the necklace,” Batman observed the gift from the Arusian Queen.
“Yes,” Wonder Woman said surprised Batman was changing the subject. “It’s quite lovely.”
“Jewelry didn’t usually concern you.”
“I thought it was something lovely to wear,” Wonder Woman said. “It was a gift from a Queen. One doesn’t take gifts from queens lightly.”
“Have you always worn that necklace around Superman?” Batman asked, working on a hunch.

“Yes,” Wonder Woman answered not following Batman. “Why?”
“Who’s choice was that?” Batman asked.
Wonder Woman was on her guard now. “What are you insinuating?”
Superman entered the room holding two root beer floats in his hands. “Root beer float?”
“Perfect timing,” Wonder Woman said taking her drink. “I’ll go file our report of our mission,” Wonder Woman informed Superman and left the room.
With Wonder Woman gone, Superman glared at Batman. “What’s your problem, Bruce?”
“That’s the question I have for you.”
“I’m fine but you won’t be if you hit on Diana.” Superman locked a hand around Batman’s throat and lift him off his feet. “She’s mine and don’t you forget it. What I did to Green Lantern will be nothing with what I do to you.” Superman dropped him and walked away.
Batman rubbed his neck. He never worried about Superman attacking him, but now he was starting too. He found Green Lantern and J’onn in the Control Room. Wonder Woman had finished her report and quickly left.
“I think Diana’s necklace is controlling Superman.”
J‘onn and Green Lantern looked at Batman in disbelief. “The necklace Diana got from the Queen of Arusia?” Green Lantern said.
“Why would you think that?” J’onn asked.
“Superman didn’t start acting strange until after that mission.” He looked at Green Lantern. “You said once you return to the Javelin, Superman took a nap in one of the rooms. That’s never happened before and if you‘ve been noticing, Diana has always worn the necklace whenever she‘s with Superman.”
“Now that you mention it, she has,” J’onn said thinking back.
“If that’s the case, we need to get the necklace and analyze it,” Green Lantern said.
“Once Superman leaves for the night, we’ll get Diana to give us the necklace,” J’onn said .
“I’ve already given my hand away,” Batman said recalling Superman‘s attack on him. “It’s best if you, J’onn, talk to Diana. She wouldn’t suspect anything from you.”
J’onn nodded his agreement.
An hour later, J’onn noticed Wonder Woman walking with Superman to the teleporter. They said a few things to each other that J’onn couldn’t hear but the looks they shared said it all. Once Superman left, J’onn called her over.
“Diana, may I have a word with you?”
Wonder Woman walked to him at his station. “Sure, J’onn. What is it?”
“I’ve noticed a change in Superman’s behavior that concerns me,” he said gravely.
“How so?”
“His personality has change and I think it has something to do the necklace you’re wearing.”
On instinct, Diana touched her necklace. “What do you mean?”
“I didn’t mean to but I pried into Superman’s mind. Superman seems free of his inhibitions. Superman’s personality change didn’t start until he saw you wear that necklace. I think it has an odd effect on him.”
“I don’t think you’re right.”
“Diana, I’m aware of your feelings towards, Superman. If you two want to be together, that is your business of which I have no problem with. All I want is to analyze the necklace and see if it is just a piece of jewelry.”
“How can you think a piece of jewelry is controlling Superman?”
“You always wear it with him around and Superman only had a change in behavior when the necklace came into your possession,” J’onn explained.
Wonder Woman took that into consideration. Superman did request she wear it always and for reasons she didn’t fully understand, she complied but the thought of Superman being controlled by a necklace was ridiculous. Still, if J’onn was having suspicions about Superman she knew to trust him. J‘onn have always been honest and looked out for the members without a motive like Batman.
Wonder Woman removed the necklace and gave it to J‘onn. “I hope you‘re wrong about this.” She said nothing more as she left the room. Batman appeared moments later. J’onn gave him the necklace. Batman took the teleporter back to Gotham.
Batman was only gone two hours before he was asked to be teleported back to the Watchtower. Green Lantern was going back to his apartment when J’onn alerted him Batman was returning. Green Lantern stayed on. If Batman was back this soon, he must’ve found something.
Batman materialized and stepped off the teleporter. “Superman is affected with red kryptonite.”
“Red kryptonite?” Green Lantern frowned at the name. “I thought there was just the green.”
“Apparently, there’s another. It affects Superman’s personality and releases him of his inhibitions.”
“That explains his outburst at the meeting,” Green Lantern said.
“How do you return him to normal?” J’onn asked.
“I would assume it wears off like green kryptonite but the timeframe of when it is remains unknown,” Batman explained. “The more he’s exposed to it, the longer it affects him.”
“It’s been over a week,” Green Lantern said.
“We need to alert Diana,” J’onn said seriously.
“And Superman, but who’s gonna tell him?”
The three men looked at each other and said, “Diana.”
Diana was surprised to be disturb while she slept. Normally, when she retired to her room, Diana was left alone until the morning. Diana reached for her beeping communicator on her nightstand. “Diana, it’s J’onn. I’m sorry to disturb you but it’s important I speak with you.”
Diana got out of bed and changed into her Wonder Woman attire and left the room. She entered the Control Room to find J‘onn, Green Lantern and Batman standing in the room. “What is it? Is there an emergency?”
“Yes. It’s Superman. It’s being controlled by red kryptonite,” J’onn explained.
Wonder Woman was awake now. “Red? I thought there was only green.”
“Apparently not.” Batman handed Wonder Woman the necklace she given him. “I’ve analyzed it. It has the same components as green kryptonite. The red one affects his personality.”
Wonder Woman thought of Superman’s behavior over the past few days: his sudden confidence, his outbursts, his admitting his feelings to her. “What do you mean affects him?”
“It frees him of his inhibitions. He says what’s on his mind.”
“Which is not always smart,” Green Lantern said, recalling the meeting.
“How can we make him normal?” Wonder Woman asked.
“Hopefully, the red kryptonite wears off in a day or two,” Green Lantern said. “That means you can’t be wearing that necklace around him.”
“Or we could expose him to green kryptonite and deal with the problem immediately,” Batman said.
“No,” Wonder Woman argued. “Let me talk to him.” Wonder Woman stepped on the teleporter and transferred herself to Metropolis.
Once Wonder Woman arrived in Metropolis, she flew to Clark’s apartment. She arrived on the balcony where his bedroom was and tapped lightly. Clark woke up and smiled seeing Diana. He got up and opened the window, allowing her entrance.
Clark pulled Wonder Woman in his arms for a quick kiss. “Diana, what are you doing here?”
“I need to talk to you.”
Clark turned on the lights and Wonder Woman took a seat in a chair while Clark sat on the bed. “There’s no easy way to say this but I think the necklace I’ve been wearing has been affecting you.”
Clark laughed. “What?”
“The jewel on my necklace is red kryptonite. It affects your personality, makes you free of your inhibitions.”
“That can’t be,” Clark protested. “Why would you think that?”
“You have been different this past week,” Wonder Woman said delicately, knowing Clark wasn’t going to like what she had to say next. “Batman examined my necklace--”
“Batman?” Clark frowned. “You’re working with him?”
“No. J’onn gave it to him without my knowing. I didn’t know Batman was going to examine it. I only gave it to them to prove them wrong about you, but instead they proved me wrong. The affects of the red kryptonite should wear off in a few days as long as you stay out of contact with the necklace.”
Clark shook his head, stubbornly. “No, that’s not possible. I am not under some kind of control from a necklace.”
“Yes, you are.”
Clark and Wonder Woman turned to see Batman standing on the balcony. Batman shot a dart at Clark. Clark fell off the bed and tumbled to the floor. Wonder Woman went to him and examined the wound. She looked at Batman furious. “Kryptonite! Bruce, how could you?”
“It was the only way to stop him. Your way wasn’t working.”
Wonder Woman removed the kryptonite from Clark. Batman retrieved it and put it away in his compartment on his belt. The wound closed up and Clark opened his eyes, looking puzzled. “Diana, Bruce, what are you doing here?”
Wonder Woman and Batman spent the next half hour explaining to Clark what happened. As Clark recovered from the kryptonite, he was slowly remembering all the things he did while under the powers of the red kryptonite. “I can’t believe I did those things.” He looked to Batman and Wonder Woman. “I’m sorry. I have so much apologizing to do, especially to John and Shayera. I was a different person.”
Wonder Woman frowned. She wasn’t sure if Superman was only apologizing about his behavior at the meeting or for the way he acted when they were together.
“I’m going,” Batman said heading for the balcony. “Diana can fill you in on the rest.” And before anyone can question it, he was gone.
Clark turned to Wonder Woman. “Diana…I…. I don’t know what to say. This isn’t how I….I mean, I didn’t want you to know.”
“Because of Lois?” Her words were sharp but true.
“Lois was part of it, but I didn’t know how you felt about me.”
“Now you do.” Wonder Woman drummed her fingers on the arm of her chair. “Are you going back to her?”
Clark sighed, knowing Diana wasn‘t going to like this. “I have to see her and apologize for the things I’ve said to her.”
“That’s not what I meant and you know it.”
Clark sighed. “Diana, I have a lot to think about now.”
“If she accepts your apology and wants to resume your relationship, will you?”
Clark shook his head. “No. I don’t know. The truth is out. You know how I feel for you.” Wonder Woman stood and head for the balcony. “Diana, wait!” Clark called out but she was flying away.
Clark spent the night thinking over his behavior the past few days, Lois and Diana. He went to work normal for the first time in a week. Apparently, no one noticed his change there. After work, he changed into Superman and flew to Lois’ apartment. He knocked lightly on her window. Lois allowed him entry but she was scowling at him.
“What do you want?” Lois said.
“I came to say I’m sorry,” Superman apologized and went on to explain what happened to him with the red kryptonite.
“Well, it certainly explains a lot of things,” Lois said. “Apology accepted, but that doesn’t change anything about us.”
“I know,” Superman said solemnly.
Lois was stunned by Superman‘s admittance. She was only bluffing and hoping to have Superman ask to be taken back. “You do?”
“Yes. A lot of things were said.” He was disgusted with what he said to Lois. “All cruel but undeniably true. I do have feelings for Wonder Woman, very strong feelings. It wouldn’t be right to be involve with you with you knowing what I think.”
Lois didn‘t want this. She still wanted Superman but it was clear he didn’t want to be with her anymore. It made sense but Lois didn‘t like it. “I wouldn’t want to hang on to you, knowing you want someone else. I want someone to want me.” She was lying to herself but she knew it was for the best even though she was going to be hurt by it. “So, I guess this is goodbye.”
“I’ll still be around,” Superman said trying to lighten the mood.
“As friends. I know.” Lois said dryly. Impulsively she hugged Superman. “Goodbye,” she whispered. Lois struggled to hold in her tears. The last thing she wanted was Superman seeing her cry.
He didn’t. Superman hugged Lois back. He gave her a kiss on the cheek and left her apartment.
*****
“Welcome back,” Green Lantern said seeing Superman returned to the Watchtower.
Superman shook Green Lantern‘s hand. “Thanks. It’s been an interesting few days and I’m sorry about what I said about you and Shayera,” he apologized sincerely. “Is everything all right with you and Vixen? I thought you and Shayera were over.”
“It was one time, Clark and I knew it was wrong after it was over but I couldn’t help myself. I haven’t told Vixen, but I will.” Green Lantern forced a smile and said, “Anyway, we’re glad you’re back.”
“Thanks.” Superman made it casual, talking to J’onn, Flash, and Green Arrow who were also in the room. Superman scanned the Watchtower and found Wonder Woman in the cafeteria. He approached Wonder Woman just as she dumped her finished dinner in the garbage. “May I talk to you?”
Wonder Woman stared at him, her expression unreadable. “Only at the Fortress.”
Superman agreed with her not knowing why but later thought it was a good idea. At the Fortress, they wouldn’t have to worry about prying ears or curious eyes.
Once inside the Fortress, they entered a sitting room. Diana took a seat on the sofa and Superman sat across from her. “Diana, I want you to know how sorry I am. I’m sorry for leaving you with the wrong impression but I had to think about all that has happened to me. I know what I want now.”
“And that means going back to Lois?” Diana guessed.
“If I went back to Lois, Diana, I’d be denying myself who I really want.”
Diana was silent for a moment before she responded, “She didn’t take you back?”
“I told her it was best we weren’t together anymore. It wouldn’t be right for us to be involve when both parties aren’t committed to each other. When one wants to be with someone else.” He was looking at Diana now. “When one has strong feelings and can’t get the woman he wants out of his mind. I am deeply attracted to you, Diana and I would like to see where this would go.”
Diana knew what he was saying, “So, the balls in my court. I want to know if all the things you said to me while under the power of red kryptonite were true.”
“They were. I’ve always had feelings for you, Diana. I didn’t think you felt the same. I did think of myself as the awkward boy wanting a date with the Prom Queen. You’re a princess, Diana and one day you will be queen. That’s a lot for a guy who grew up on a farm even if he has phenomenal powers to deal with.”
Diana said nothing and Superman continued. “There was one good thing about the red kryptonite. It gave me the courage to tell you how I feel for you.”
“And if it hadn’t been for the red kryptonite, you would still be with Lois while your feelings for me would continued to go unsaid. Were you ever going to tell Lois or were you going stay with her?”
“It wouldn’t be forever, Diana. I don’t know how long we would’ve lasted but it wasn’t going to go on forever. Diana, Lois doesn’t know I’m Clark Kent. Lois only knows Superman and nothing personally about his life. Eventually, a relationship like that was going to give. And to answer your question, yes, I was going to call things off with her but I didn’t know how to say it to her without hurting her.”
“But you had to,” Wonder Woman said. “There was no way around that. I don’t know if this will work, Kal. Are you always going to suppress your feelings or will you eventually take a stand on what you want?” she asked strongly. “You can’t always depend on red kryptonite to tell you what you need and I won’t either.”
“I know that and I won’t. If anything, this tells me on certain things, I can’t hold back. I have to go after what I want.” Superman stood and sat besides Diana. Capturing her eyes with his, he said, “And I want you. Can’t you give me another chance? Can’t we start over?”
Wonder Woman stared into his eyes, seeing the sincerely in them. He meant what he said about his feelings for her and his desire to start a relationship with her. “One day at a time, Kal. One day at a time.”
