Coda

by Pervy Fic Girl
Occasionally, the world lets them relax. Shayera's not overly fond of those times, though she's more fond of those times than she used to be. On such occasions, more often than not, she's pulling referee duty between John and Carter.

One day, they are going to drop Rex during one of their fights over those impossible fake wings Carter made him for his fifth birthday. Shayera's not sure which one of them she's going to beat up first, though she supposes she's obligated to not beat her husband up quite as much.

"Are they always like this?" Diana asks lazily at her side as she frowns at the contents of the picnic basket that Clark packed. Looks like John and Carter weren't the only ones that are going to get their asses kicked later. The warrior within Shayera is pleased at the thought, because something has to balance out all of this
domesticity.

"Yes," Shayera answers Diana. "They are. Carter seems determined to teach Rex how to fly, and John thinks no one should teach his son how to fly but him."

"Does John have any idea how the artificial wings work?"

"Nope." Shayera doesn't add that John's trip to the future revealed that Rex did, in fact, use the artificial wings, which, in turn, makes him more upset. "Did Clark remember to pack the applesauce? It's Rex's favorite."

Diana withdraws the jar from the basket. "Lara reminded us."

Shayera scowls at the jar. "I bet you never have to deal with any alpha male competitions in raising Lara."

Diana rolls her eyes and jerks her head in the direction of Clark and Lara playing Frisbee on the park lawn. Occasionally, Lara stops, points up to the sky, and laughs. From the safety of John's arms, Rex waves back. "You've never had the privilege of hearing Clark and Bruce fight over her 'Robinization,' then."

"Stupid men. Have any Amazonian anti-male sentiments appropriate for the occassion?"

Diana frowns. "They are stubborn and prideful, to the exclusion of all that truly matters?" she offers.

"Sounds about right." Shayera glances up at her son and a soft smile slips onto her face. "Some of them might not be too bad, though."

It's been five years since Doctor Fate carried Rex Stewart into a better world. He still watches over the child, albeit not nearly as much as before.

The child's parents in this universe have lapsed into a compatible friendship and partnership that escaped the other Shayera Hol and John Stewart. Watching the lovers is not a easy task for Fate, because they remind him too much of the other Shayera's end. After seeing that her child was in perfectly capable hands, Shayera had grown too restless to remain in Fate's domain - she'd longed to return to a planet where she could once again spread her wings. It hadn't taken long for Thanagarians to find her. Hro had possessed absolutely no mercy. . . but Fate will not dwell upon that. He choses instead to remember how happy the other Shayera had been for the life she'd given her son.

When Fate watches Rex with his parents, aunts, and uncles, he choses to be happy for the child as well. Moreover, he choses to be proud to have had anything to do with the contentment of The Future Warhawk and his parents.
