The Date

by DC Lady

Clark watches Diana as she watches Bruce and he doesn’t understand how a man—any man—could turn his back on this woman. This Wonder Woman. But Bruce has. And although Clark is in constant amazement of Bruce and the abilities most meta humans couldn’t compete with, he’s also sad that his friend seems to run from even the most basic of human emotions: love.
Clark sits down next to Diana and pretends not to see the hands she has clenched into fists as Bruce turns his back to her and walks away after she invites him to join her for lunch. Clark just smiles, shifts a bit in his seat. He knows it’s not the smile she is used to seeing. It’s not Superman who is sitting next to her, but Clark Kent. And Clark is nervous. “Flash is hosting the movie of the week in the rec hall tonight. Want to go with me?”
She smiles, but he knows he’s not who she wants to have a date with tonight, although he would like their first date to be much more than a rec hall movie of The Three Stooges—Flash’s personal favorite.  But he hopes tonight is the beginning of more dates to come because Bruce will never ask her to a movie or do any of the things Clark knows she is craving to do with Bruce. Clark only hopes that in time, she will want to do these things with him.

Bruce watches as Clark sits with Diana, and something inside of him recoils at the prospect of the two of them together. Clark’s smitten with her. Who wouldn’t be? She’s Wonder Woman. But he has yet to make a move. A move Bruce refuses to make--a move Bruce knows she would accept. But his mission is all consuming. And he will not allow it to consume her, too, eventually casting her into his dark world. So the thought of Clark asking her on a date shouldn’t repel him as much as it does. She deserves him.  Deserves the kind of life he can give her. But Bruce is selfish enough to be angry with Clark for taking her attention away from him so soon. All Bruce will allow himself to do is regret that this is how it has to be.

Diana knows Bruce cares for her. She can see it in the stolen glances he thinks no one notices. But he refuses to allow her any closer than he already has. She guesses she should be grateful she’s been able to get this far. But she’s not. She wants more. And he knows it.
Clark sits next to her at the table and she suddenly sees the stark contrast between the two men. He smiles and she is taken aback by his look. He seems nervous and asks her to a movie in the rec hall. He’s asked her on a date, and she loves that he’s transparent about his feelings. She looks back at Bruce and realizes she finds that particular quality endearing.
She wraps her arm around Clark’s and lets him lead her down the hall. She doesn’t know who the Three Stooges are, but she’s glad to have Clark at her side to tell her about them.
